I found an article that brought together what I've heard everyone saying and
made the whole non-profit status stuff begin to make sense. I thought others
might benefit from it also so here it is:

Additionally, I ran into an organization that specializes in helping orgs
like us get up and organized as well as by taking donations. They are called
the School Factory and the program I'm referring to is called the Space
Factory. I've begun to got to know them a bit and find out how they may be
able to help us. They're setup to take non-profit donations on our behalf
and are looking at other things like board insurance, grants and accounting
support. It sounds like an interesting idea. The guy I've been in contact
with is James Carlson. My initial study suggests that he's been involved in
standing up a few organizations like this and has experience we could
benefit from.

I do get the impression that it is still rather early for them and that
they're also getting their feet on the ground, but several other
hackerspaces are already checking them out. James has offered to do a call
during one of our meetings to talk with the whole group. I'm going to look
into setting that up.
