I remember a 'toy' in the physics dept of my high school -
It was an iron rod in a upside down "U" shape, with a pair of coils
[one at each end] and a section of copper tubing on the iron rod.
when you tripped one of a pair of circuit beakers connected to
110VAC and each coil, the copper tubing flew to the other side
due to magnetic repulsion of the copper tubing [a shorted turn].
A straight iron rod, with a coil at the base, a big cap /connection
110VAC, etc, and a small section of copper tubing on the side of
a model rocket [or a pair of rods, and two sections of tubing on
each side of the model rocket].

Actually, rail guns typically have consumables. And large capacitors and power supplies.

So, we talked a bit about rail guns last night and then I find this from Make Magazine in my inbox: http://makeprojects.com/Project/10-Rail-Model-Rocket-Mega-Launcher/243/1
This naturally leads to could we build something like that to launch rockets by railgun instead of igniters. This would, of course, then reduce the need to keep buying those little hobby rocket motors making it more accessible to have kids participate over and over again despite economic means. We basically could get rid of the consumables. Plus, the awesome factor of rail guns comes into play, but this includes kids getting to not only watch, but participate by building a rail gun rocket and see their creation fly.
So, what are the problems that must be overcome?
