If you really don't have a clue and want the best you can buy and get up and running quickly, and can afford it, get a MakerBot. You won't regret it. :)
If you're good with woodworking and don't have a friend with a 3d printer, I'd suggest building a whiteant, you can download all the plans at the bottom of this page http://buildyourcnc.com/whiteAnt3DPrinterandCNCMachine.aspx
If you can get someone to print parts for you, I'd suggest considering a Mendel90 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17826 or MendelMax http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:12645
If you just want a Prusa RepRap Mendel kit, I suggest http://www.makergear.com/products/3d-printers

I've also pondered it. I'm partial to the Ron Thomp Mendel at the moment. (http://ronthompmendel.com/) There are a few 3D printers around so you could probably find someone willing to print the printable parts out for you locally.
Tony Buser is on here and he's built a rep rap or three. He's also techincal editor for Printing in Plastic: Build Your Own 3D Printer, employed doing research or something like that at MakerBot Industries, messing with the reprappy whiteant CNC machine and bunches of other things. He's in Reading and is connected with the Berks CoLab so not as local as most of us.

anyone in here ever build their own? I’m pondering building one, but I have to buy bits slowly as I don’t have a lot of money available at once. I have a mega 1280 lying around I can use. and a 13.8v 20 amp psu I can use to power it. but I don’t have the rest.
