I guess to summarize ... If you want a 3d printer ... Save your money and buy one of the complete kits .... You're still going to need to put it together. Highly likely you are not going to save any money doing it piecemeal ... And you may end up frustrated in the end.
However ..... If you just want to build something from scratch for the sake of building ... Maybe loosely following someone else's design ... Improving or changing as you go ... Have at it and please share your experience!
My CNC router project is just that ... It's more about the journey than the destination.
