It has been decided to go with the Arduino Nano for the course. If anyone is interested jumping in on the order I will need to know immediately. The unit price comes down to about $11 a piece. The downside, I don't know the shipping costs off but I do know shipping will take a bit since these boards are getting ordered from China. If you want one later, well don't worry because Jared found some for $12 a piece. These nano's have the FTDI chip directly on board so if you want a boardduino without an external FTDI this is a great option for a great price!
