[MakeLV] Computer hulks of any value?

I am of 2 opinions on this. As I recall the conversation last night, I
believe Jared mentioned an extreme interest in an old Compaq 1u Alpha server
I still have in York. With that thought in mind, I am sure any unusual
hardware could easily find a home with us. Like Amiga, or a Commodore 64,
ect. On the flip side, there are machines that are ripe for the scrap pile
simply because of various factors such as lack of parts, age, condition,
duplicity, usability, ect. Either way I think we can welcome whatever is
donated as, depending on the hardware, we could hope to use it in the Open
Stack project. Are there any other thoughts?

I am in full agreement with Jared on this one. I know at the space we could
use more hard drives and ram, newer hardware is nice but as it is we have a
lot of computers that should be in working order. As a space, I think we
should set limits on the minimum hardware to be procured.

Can Dr. Lou and Josh care to comment at all? I think they are the most well
versed on our current computer inventory.

We've got a lot of working computers at the moment, and three times that

I'd say we could pass on them - but lets hear what the rest of the group has
to say.

Da Vinci Science Center has about a dozen old computers that are so slow
under XP that we were happy to replace them with 3-year old machines from a
donor. They have been stripped of hard drives and a couple have been
stripped of RAM. We were planning to send them to a recycler, but I
wondered if they were of any value to anyone or to the space - scrap metal?
useful to drive a 3-D printer or other not too demanding task? What say
you?
