Close friends with inventor Charles Babbage, Lovelace was\u00a0intrigued by his Analytical Engine and in 1842, she translated a\u00a0description of it by Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea. Babbage\u00a0asked her to expand the article, &#8220;as she understood [it] so well&#8221;, and<br \/>\nthis was when she wrote several early &#8216;computer programs&#8217;. Ada\u00a0Lovelace died of cancer at 36, her potential tragically unfulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>Ada Lovelace Day aims to raise the profile of women in science,\u00a0technology, engineering and maths (STEM) by encouraging people around\u00a0the world to talk about the women whose work they admire. This\u00a0international day of celebration helps people learn about the\u00a0achievements of \u00a0women in STEM, inspiring others and creating new role\u00a0models for young and old alike.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately women only hold about 24% of STEM jobs, however women in\u00a0STEM jobs earn 33% more than those in non-STEM occupations, and the<br \/>\nwage gap between men and women in STEM jobs is smaller than in other\u00a0fields! (source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceprogress.org\/2011\/08\/women-missing-out-on-high-paying-stem-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/scienceprogress.org\/2011\/08\/women-missing-out-on-high-paying-stem-jobs\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I encourage you to mention Ms. Lovelace as well as talk about other\u00a0pioneers in the STEM world &#8230;. some thoughts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Madame Curie, famous for her pioneering research on radioactivity<\/li>\n<li>Rosalind Elsie Franklin, the TRUE discoverer of the Double Helix\u00a0Structure of DNA ( and you thought it was Crick and Watson \ud83d\ude09 )<\/li>\n<li>Sally Ride, first US Woman in space<\/li>\n<li>Limor Fried, (aka ladyada) an electrical engineer and owner of the\u00a0electronics hobbyist company, Adafruit Industries.
